We recently found this spoon without a die strike for the maker instead it has been engraved by the maker. It appears to have been made by
Born: Dec. 8, 1736, New Haven CT Died: Nov. 6, 1829, Litchfield CT The mono looks like M B. I wonder what the story is? Could William Ward have made this for member of his Beach (Lettice Beach) branch of his family? IP: Logged |

That is possible, of course, but it may also be his daughter Marietta, who was married in 1789 to John Birge of Litchfield, where they lived out their lives. IP: Logged |

I suspect the daughter is correct. IP: Logged |

And Mr. Ward was only 85 at the time this spoon was made. If he did his own engraving he still had a steady hand at that age. IP: Logged |

There is also the chance that the William was Old Bill's son, who also spent his life in Litchfield. He is listed as a watchmaker in the 1850 census, but the Munger family genealogy (he married a Charlotte Munger) notes that he was a silversmith and jeweler, as well. Unfortunately, the book has been found to be quite unreliable, so that should be taken with a grain of salt for now. I still like old Bill for it. IP: Logged |

I don't suppose it matters much, but all the records that I have access to point to a Joseph Birge being the husband of Marietta Ward of Litchfield, Connecticut. IP: Logged |

I suppose it does to him -- or his ghost and I don't need any more bad spectral karma. My mistake and thanks for picking it up. IP: Logged |
