Waldauer & Kahn was a partnership in St. Louis in 1865 and 1866. There full names were August Waldauer and Joseph Kahn.

Has anyone see reference to this partnership working in another city?

The gentlemen were half brothers. Both immigrated from Germany, Waldauer arriving around 1840 and living in St. Louis by 1844. He was a trained violinist and had a distinguished career as a player, conductor, and composer. I suspect he was essentially a silent partner in the business, lending a well-known name to the firm. He died in 1900, survived by his brother.

August Waldauer was a member of Jenny Lind’s orchestra. He was probably in the orchestra when Jenny Lind sang in St. Louis.
Thanks Wev.

I cannot answer the question here other than to say that I find no trace of this partnership beyond the mid 1860's in St Louis.

Joseph Kahn is listed in the household of August Waldauer in two separate 1880 St Louis census enumerations. One enumeration labels him as a half brother to August and the other as a step brother. From what I have seen myself so far, the latter is correct.

The March 1909 issue of Optical Review notes Joseph Kahn formerly a St Louis jeweler and optician died recently at his home, 3524 Sidney Street.

Thanks Bascall. Sidney is a nice quiet street in South St. Louis and I suspect in his time most of his neighbors were German immigrants or of German descent. Bellefontaine cemetery, the location of his half brother’s grave, is located is in North St. Louis not far from where I grew up
