[01-2123] I have a teaspoon which is clearly marked with the name of Henry Evans. I can't find any information about this silversmith. I'm pretty certain that the spoon comes from a wedding set of my great-great grandmother's who was married in New Jersey in the early part of the 19th century. Any clues? IP: Logged |

Per Ensko IV, Henry Evans worked in New York in 1820, and in Newark, N.J. in 1835. Worked through about 1863. IP: Logged |

Wow. That was a speedy response! Thanks. I am certain it's great-great grandma's now (an old crank from all reports) but the teaspoons are lovely. IP: Logged |

There is a Henry Evans that shows up in the Newark, NJ 1850 and 1860 U. S. Federal Census's as a jeweler and then watchmaker. He was born about 1808 in England which doesn't quite fit Ensko's working period for a Henry Evans. The gentleman in the census would have been begun work maybe ten years later, but he does appear to drop out of site about the right time. An interesting thing about the Henry Evans in the census is that he has a son named Theodore Evans who was born in 1833 in New Jersey. Theordore is a clerk in the 1850 census, but by 1860 his occupation is jeweler. In 1900 Theodore is a Manhattan, NY silversmith. IP: Logged |

Theodore was pretty successful - Rainwater has a good blurb, and his/their mark is one I see with some regularity here in Central New York (where it is sometimes confused with the earlier Binghamton firm of Thomas Evans & Son). IP: Logged |
