We found this nice punch ladle in Atlanta this weekend. It was retailed by Henry McKeen of Philadelphia and has pleasant drop on the back of the bowl. The last thing we need is another punch ladle, but this one had the exact initials of my wife and we could not leave it. Her maiden name started with a Mc and that initial just does not come up very often. It is a plus that the engraving is of the feathered style. It is almost time to bring out the punch bowls and have a celebration, and this ladle can be our "old family piece". IP: Logged |

That is a handsome ladle. I also like the paisley shawl and the tartan box. I'm ready for some punch now (though I wonder if it might be a soup ladle?). IP: Logged |

Above are pictures of the McKeen mark and the nice rounded drop on the back of the bowl. This ladle probably started its life as a soup ladle, but we use it for punch. Ladles seem to have started with round bowls, then the bowl gradually evolved into an oval shape and finally some later ones have a pronounced narrowing at both ends. The latter does help direct the flow, but as they are much later in time I don’t have any. My wife collects Tartan ware and this piece is actually a book entitled “The Lyric Gems of Scotland – First Series”, published by Bell and Bain of Glasgow. She collects more things than I do by far and the paisley shawl is one that has a thousand stitches on the back and must have taken years to make. She usually uses them for tablecloths. Photobucket has a place to click when you log on to allow you to use their old software and for some reason the old works better for me. After the New Year when I have more time I will explore their new system. They now include an editing section that some may find useful, but my problem is that I could not get it to save the size I wanted. IP: Logged |
