[01-2991] As so often happens when I go searching for some item A, I stumble across item B, which proves too interesting to resist. Today I was looking into, well, I forget what when I ran across a list of newly issued patents in the 1899 Jeweler's Circular. Among them was one given to Isabella Beecher Hooker for a souvenir spoon design. The picture shown was too grubby to make out, but her name tickled a bit and female designers were few and far between in those days, as we all know. A little poking about turned up the original patent and her vitals. The spoon "bears pictorial representations illustrating characters and scenes described in the well-known work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, entitled 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'".
The patent was witnessed by William Henry Watrous Isabella Beecher was born 22 February 1825 to the Reverend Lyman Beecher and his second wife, Harriet Porter. The good Reverend's first wife, Roxanna Foote, had born him a daughter in 1811, Harriet Elizabeth, who married Calvin Stowe in 1836 and published her famous book in 1852. All in all, a nice new addition to the project. IP: Logged |
