I recently acquired this handsome ladle, but have not come up with any satisfactory identification of the mark.
Given the basic form, I would suspect a New York origin, but who knows? It is 15" long with a 4" bowl and substantial weight. Anyone recognize the maker? IP: Logged |

Indeed -- I'll have to mix up a pretty good punch to live up to it. Here is another EM mystery from the other end of the spectrum. It measures 5 1/2" and is quite light. and the mark IP: Logged |

These look similar enough to be by t he same person. How about Elijah Morgan, Poughkeepsie, w, 1807 - 35 or later? Letter forms of E and M are somewhat alike in his full name mark (Darling). I usually associate this decorated finless fiddle (coffin type) with NYC (esp. Bernard Wenman and others), but maybe also elsewhere. Somewhere I think I have/have seen other examples, but I can't put my finger on any of them at the moment, except for one teaspoon (also unidentified) similar to yours, same mark and decoration, but a round end and different owner initials. There appears to be an immature shoulder on your ladle and the use of any shoulder with a coffin end would seem unusual. Would that indicate that the ladle was made away from a trend setting area? Is there a drop on the ladle that would give a hint as to the time it was made? Was there a typeset sample book in these days for designers to use? IP: Logged |

Early shoulders appear on coffin fiddles throughout New England, from Massachusetts to Vermont as well as New York. I would not call them rare. They would be rare elsewhere., however [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 01-15-2013).] IP: Logged |

Swarter have you seen any oval bowls on coffin ladles? I think shoulders came into use before the use of oval bowls, but I really have no evidence of that. IP: Logged |

Although he has probably already been considered and rejected, Ebenezer Moulton might otherwise be worth considering. IP: Logged |
