Here is a handsome little (4 3/8") spoon by an unidentified maker.

Ensko lists, in the unidentified maker section, a c 1725 rat tail tablespoon with the mark I.P.S. If this is the same person, this spoon must have been made near the end of his career, c 1760. A middle name, if that is what we have here, was still unusual in the 18th century, but I have no likely suspect.

Here, but not on the Continent or in Canada.

Interesting thought. John Potwine had two sons, John and Thomas. John spent his life in Hartford, but Thomas went off to Yale, became a preacher, and served in various CT towns. Pure speculation, of course.

Or it could be a compound name such as was used in Quebec in the 18th C, like Jean-Baptiste Piquette and others. Something like (but not) Jean-Pierre StCroix.
