One of the aspects of my little project that I most enjoy is tracking down examples and the families they belonged to. Aided and abetted by Swarter, who brought the tankard and portrait to my attention, I recently found an interesting family group with three pieces spanning three generations in Batavia NY. On 26 July 1821, the promising young attorney George Washington Lay married Olive, the beautiful daughter of John and Elizabeth (Cary) Foote. George went on to a distinguished and prosperous career, including two terms in Congress and a stint as Charge D'Affaires to Sweden. Befitting such success, he had his wife's portrait painted by Rembrandt Peale
On to the silver. The first is a pitcher presented to George by his father, John Lay and made by Henry Salisbury.
It is 12 7/8" tall, weights 33.35 ounces, and is inscribed "George W. Lay / from his Father / John Lay" Next is a very handsome tankard made by Wolfe & Wriggins of Philadelphia.
It is 5 1/8" tall and weights a hefty 15.75 ounces, and is inscribed "Olive F. Lay" in a floral cartouche. The third is another pitcher presented to Margaret Smith Lay by her maternal grandmother Margaret (Atwater) Smith, and made by Francis Cooper.
It is 6 5/8" tall, weights 8.5 ounces, and is inscribed "M S L" on one side and "From Her / Grandmother / Margaret Smith / 1861" on the other. Lastly, here is a simplified family tree
Though the generations continue on today, I am sorry to say that none of the pieces remain in the family, but have been dispersed into private collections. IP: Logged |
