It's been quite a long time, but I gave in and bought a spoon, which arrived today. It was made c 1780 by John Gibbs in Providence RI. It measures 8 1/8" and has a good heft. It is engraved I * C on the handle back and, in a later script, Joseph Crawford on the bowl back. I believe this was the Captain Joseph born 16 October 1736 into a wealthy and prominent Providence family. The spoon has a lovely webbed shell swage and a nice clean maker's mark
I'll need another intervention if more pieces like this float by. . . IP: Logged |
