I found this fork just last week, and although what little I know about coin silver I have learned here, I don't know much, but I took a chance. Am I correct in assuming that it is coin? I thought Olive when I saw it, but it seems to be Tuscan specifically, and the only mark is S.W. Pepper. Thankfully, WEV has him listed, but no mark other than in partnership with his father if I read it right. I don't have a copy of Belden. It is in excellent condition and is rather large and of heavy gauge. Am I right to assume it was made by Wm. Gale and retailed by Pepper? IP: Logged |

I think you are right to assume Samuel Pepper was the retailer of this spoon. Some of Gale’s Tuscan pattern items were marked with the date of his patent. Yours does not have this date and may indicate that it was made after the patent expired. Or maybe Gale just did not mark all the flatware that left is facility. Do a search in the “American Silver before Sterling” section of this forum with the term Tuscan and you will find more information on all the Olive variations and a copy of the Gale patent. The Olive variations were extremely popular and it seems like most major manufacturers, both solid and plated, of silver had their own version. You found a pretty fork to use today. IP: Logged |

Thanks, ahwt! I'm keeping this one out where I can use it when I'm feeling special. If it were plated, that would be fine as well. I have a simple Redfield and Rice teaspoon that I am partial to, even though it is plated, because it is in such beautiful condition for its age. IP: Logged |
