I have a piece of coin silver, c.1850, with mark that appears to read Wood and Tober. Appears to be a retailer's mark as opposed to a maker's mark. Is anyone familiar with a retailer by this name? I am a collector of silver, with a special love for Federal up to mid 19th century American coin silver. Part of the fun for me is tracing the marks and learning where pieces were made and who made (or at least sold) them. I do pretty well with the standard references and John McGrew's book "Manufacturer's Marks on American Coin Silver" is usually very helpful to me especially from the retailer standpoint, but not in this case -- unless I am misreading Tober and it is actually Taber. (McGrew notes a Taber in Rhode Island, but Taber did not partner with anyone named Wood as far as I can tell). Unfortunately, I have not been able to get my camera to take an adequate image of the mark, but it is your basic all caps mark, not in a rectangle. So, if anyone has info on Wood and Taber or Wood and Tober, I would love to hear about it! IP: Logged |

There were actually at least eight Taber's working as jewelers and manufacturers in Providence. Also half a dozen Wood's, but no record of a partnership between the two, that I have found. IP: Logged |

Taber's who were jewelers are all around the country as well as Wood's, but again none so far that were obvious as partners. Do not despair entirely. Some of these people don't show in the first bunch of tries. And there's always the chance that they'll never show up, but it's still early for this one. IP: Logged |
