This is a nice 13” platter spoon in the fiddle thread pattern. It has William Adams mark and the manufacturer’s mark for Henry Hebbard and Co. The curious thing about this spoon is that it also has a Bigorne mark as a counter mark to one that also bears resemblance to a Bigorne mark. These marks are on opposite side the spoon just as the French would mark their silver, except that the second mark would normally be the Minerva head. Why would Adams or Hebbard use French looking marks? Did either one of these silversmiths use quality marks that mimicked the French marks? Adams was trained by a French silversmith, but other that that these marks seem strange. Scott your photo hosting website works great. I did try to upload pictures of the full spoon, but the pictures were too large. I will try to cut down the size and upload these in the future.

It's a French import mark. IP: Logged |

Thanks Richard. I guess somewhere in this spoon's past it traveled to France. It must have gotten homesick as it finally came back to the states. This import mark appears to have been used from July 1, 1864 to June 30, 1893. William Adams was no longer making silver after 1862 so the silver platter spoon must have been taken to France by its owner. Is there any evidence that American silversmiths sold finished goods to the French? I finally figured out how to make the file smaller so that it would load. IP: Logged |
