Above is a cowrie shell snuff box with the mark “C Giffing” NY. The only places I could find Mr. Christopher Giffing listed are on WEV’s site American Silversmiths and in Robert Alan Green’s book “Marks of American Silversmiths”. WEV has quite a bit of information about Mr. Giffing and shows the same mark as is on this forget me not box. I suspect that the initials on this inside with the “Forgot me Not” are of the person that gave the box and the initials on the outside are of the recipient. Some of Giffing’s works have the manufacturer’s mark of an anchor, star and bust that is attributed to John W. Forbes and after 1831 to Maltby Pelletreau. This box does not have any manufacturer’s marks so it may have been fashioned by Christopher himself. Mr. Giffing worked from 1814 to 1860 in New York City and had a short partnership with Henry Hebard in 1817.
