Above are two presentation cups that will make great punch cups. The one on the left is by D. Constant Jaccard of St. Louis. D. Constant was born in Ste. Croix Switzerland and followed his Uncle Louis and his Cousin Eugene to St. Louis. He immigrated to St. Louis in 1848 and worked in the family business. He started his own firm in 1864. He had short diplomatic career as he served as vice-consul for Switzerland in the St. Louis Consulate office. His company changed its name to Mermod Jaccard and Co. in 1873 so this cup was probably made between 1864 and 1873. The cup is engraved “Alice Maud”. The banding on the bottom of the cup is unusual and seems to me to have a Native American look to it. The handle reminds me of a harp and it although it seems too late to have been made this way it appears to be hand raised. The second cup is simply marked coin and has a nice engraving on the bottom “From Great Grandmother Havemeyer”. Interestingly no engraving announces the recipient of the cup. There is a cartouche on the front of the cup, but Great Grandmother Havemeyer chose not to have it engraved. The bottom of the cup has a bend over lip that seals the bottom portion. The St. Louis cup weights 143 grams while the unmarked cup weights 103 grams. That is enough difference to make the unmarked cup feel light. IP: Logged |

Thanks Polly. My wife also likes the octagonal sided cup. It is the only cup I have where the octagonal sides do not go all the way up to the rims. Also I have not seen the folded over bottom as a method of securing the bottom before this cup. The St. Louis cup is really just a beaker with a handle and would probably be worth more without the handle and the bottom decoration. Customers for mint julep cups are kind of fussy in that regard. I liked it because if was from St. Louis and it was hand raised. IP: Logged |
