Being driven to distraction by election robo-calls, I decided to go poking around in the 18 Boston city directories issued between 1800 and 1830. I coded up the results into a basic table of the 83 gold- and silversmiths listed and their various locations. It is not the most elegant thing, but I thought it might be of some interest. It's right above the Upload Images button. . . Thanks to you both. I am trying to work out a printable version that remains readable. I have been working through the unknowns on the list and have added half a dozen of them to the project, but most remain stubborn mysteries -- who was Nathaniel Waters at the same address, for just one year, of the smith Samuel Waters? Who were the Badgers, were they related to the famous pewtersmiths of the same city? And so it goes, one step forward, one step back. IP: Logged |

I have added two more years -- 1820 & 1822 -- and some totaling by year. I also made up a stripped down version that should fit most screens without side scrolling: IP: Logged |
