Above is a teaspoon by Daniel Booth Hempstead of New London CT and Eatonton, GA. This spoon was interesting to me because it may be an early example of the Basket of Flowers pattern on American flatware. The lack of a shoulder and the drop on the reverse part of the bowl is unusual for this pattern as I have always assumed that this pattern was popular after 1825 and by that time most spoon makers had incorporated a shoulder into their design. Also most Basket of Flowers spoons I have seen have a shell on the reverse of the bowl.

WEV’s site indicates that Mr. Hempstead was in Georgia after 1821 with a partner and a different mark so this spoon may well have been made Connecticut before 1821.

Does anyone know when the Basket of Flowers pattern started on American silver?
