Hello all,

Here is a coin teaspoon, one of a set of 6 bearing a script PT mark attributed to Peter Targee of New York by Belden. Unfortunately, we do not know much about him other than that he married in 1805 and died in 1814. The style of this spoon, though, is distinctly mid 18th C, and unless he made the set in an archaic style, the implication is that he had either been working quite some time before 1805, or the PT mark is not his. Belden seemed a bit hesitant with the attribution, and this set seem to vast some doubt upon it.

I have never been comfortable with the attribution either and have it marked as 'tentative; Winterthur.' They have two spoon in the collection with the mark. One, nearly a match to yours, is clearly mid-century and the other c 1790-1800.

I have long suspected there are a number of silversmiths working in 18th century NYC that have never been identified.

Those are almost always found with their mark. The same marks were used earlier by John Vernon, and it has been suggested that the Targee's continued their use after assuming his business. As to meaning, no plausible theory has been proposed for the odd P; the leopard's head is a typical pseudo.
