[26-2028]

Hi all.

I have recently come across three spoons (coin silver) in the olive pattern with only an incuse stamp which I assume is the retailers mark.

From Googling, 2 or 3 auctions have it listed as a retailer, which is why I say retailer. The name is M.E. Tobey.

Does anyone know where he/they were located, and during what time frame?

Thanks!

Hiya flabob,
Nice to see you back after a long dry spell. For our new folks, why don't you reintroduce yourself and your interests?

In that case, I'll save my reply if it is needed until later.

Definitely!

Nice to be back - it has been a while. To re-introduce myself - I am a collector and student of coin silver - almost predominantly American.

Have found the forums a great place to learn from some real fellow lovers and collectors of silver. Haven't really posted too much, so please point out to me if I stray any from the normal guidelines.

Thanks!

I will defer to Bascall on the details of Marcus Edmund Tobey. In the mean time, can we get a few pictures? I would appreciate a good clear shot of the mark.

Hi and thanks for the full name. It is an incuse mark, and I will attempt to post the pic. Have downloaded the Faststone resizer program, so hopefully soon. Bascal any info you have would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome back flabob and thank you wev!

Marcus E Tobey is listed in the census's in Great Barrington, Massachusetts as a goldsmith in 1850, a jeweller in 1860 and 1870, a jewelry and book store owner in 1880, and a watch repairer in 1900.

A March 10, 1897 Jeweler's Circular article found on google mentions Marcus E Tobey turning over his nearly forty-five year old business in Great Barrington to H J Mignerey.

Marcus E Tobey's name appears in the 1908 Pittsfield Directory in the list of deaths. He died on 14 July 1907 at age 75 years, 9 months, 4 days. Marcus had been living with a son in Pittsfield at the time of his death.

Along with images of the mark, sometimes a full image of a pattern is enough to identify it's maker or manufacturer.

Good luck flabob with your collecting and studies.
