Recent find, a pair of small coffee? spoons, somewhat on the light side, that look late 18c American to me, but neither of them is marked. Isn't that a bit unusual for silver of this period? I'm wondering if anyone can find any regional characteristics that might narrow down where made. IP: Logged |

Coffin handles generally are dated c 1800-1815 and it is not unusual to find pieces without marks -- I have at least 40 tea, table, and salt spoons with none. I have only seen a few makers (William Hookey comes first to mind) who had a distinct enough manner of engraving to make an unmarked attribution. IP: Logged |

Thanks Wev, I was not aware that there were so many unmarked spoons from that period. IP: Logged |

I too have a cupful of unmarked US coin tea spoons, pre 1820. Perhaps one reason they are unmarked is that marking puts more stress on already hard metal (because they are hammered hard for the final shaping) and that means on such a small and thin spoon the mark would end up causing a crack/break. Also if you were a modest smith you might only have one punch and it might be too big. This spoon looks like it's right in the mix for US coffins. The wriggle work, especially because of the back faux drop, might be the work of a continental immigrant smith/engraver... (restraining myself from making a Trump comment because I think of wriggle work as an inferior, any muggins can do it, even me, sort of decoration and I see it on rough provincial continental flatware).
