Would anyone know who BT is? On a 5" coffin end spoon... IP: Logged |

Benjamin Toppan is a possibility. The marks I have seen for him use the initials BT but are different in form from your mark. Perhaps he had a second unrecorded die. Your spoon has a very graceful look and was made by a better than average silversmith. IP: Logged |

Thank you ahwt. I had discounted Toppan since his mark does not match - but I would like for it to be by him. The "T" is very similar in style. There is a Bethuel Tuttle from CT who worked during this period, but no mark is shown for him... [This message has been edited by cbc58 (edited 10-11-2021).] IP: Logged |

Patricia Kane in her book had a second B T mark for Benjamin, but it is also different. That he had two known marks is not evidence that this is not his mark. There really are not many first names that start with B so something else may come along. Many of the "coffin" spoons look to me like they started their lives as some other pattern. Your spoon looks to me as if the silversmith created it from scratch as the proportions are right. IP: Logged |
