This goblet was up for auction recently and I believe the Gatling that received this award at an Indiana Fair was Richard Jordan Gatling of the Gatling gun fame. This award was for the best grain mill of 1855. Gatling was a prolific inventor with most of his inventions in the mechanical arts field. This goblet has the mark for George Lindner of Philadelphia. I had never seen an agricultural award for a mechanical device before, but certainly designing practical equipment was important in all industries. The dealer also said that he had two identical award goblets so Mr. Gatling received at least two. I did not realize that multiple awards would be considered necessary. I have not seen many pieces from Mr. Lindner except for those that are attributed to Traugott Leinbach's retail sales.
