This unmarked cup was awarded to James Hall in 1850 by the Rockingham Guards of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The engraver took liberty with the spelling of Guard and shortened the spelling of Portsmouth substantially. I suspect that Mr. Hall was nevertheless very pleased with his award and of having the “best shot at target.” An earlier award was a medal as shown below; I do not know when they changed from a medal to a cup or if the type was the choice of the winner. In any event, in 1850 the award was a cup in the form of Bell type beaker with a simple strap handle. The milled band is made up of alternating large and small palmettes and is very similar to one used by Fletcher & Gardiner. IP: Logged |
