The tea caddy spoon shown above has marks that imitate those of the United Kingdom and were most likely meant to enhance the perceived value of the spoon. I think this spoon predates the time when manufacturers marks became common as its style was from the late 1700s. I could not find these marks in McGrew’s book, nor could I find anything like the maker’s mark. The first letter of the makers mark is H, but the rest is obscured. Any ideas as to its maker would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

So those are not the marks for London, 1787? I'm nothing on Brit marks and have little resources, but it would be quite unlikely that an American maker would be imitating British marks at that date. IP: Logged |

Thanks from that information. The lack of a city mark confused me, but on doing a search of other tea caddy spoons from this era it was quite common not to have the London city mark. The spoon does have a "l" date mark so it is most likely from 1786. Perhaps on small items the city mark was left off. IP: Logged |
