Wonder if anyone would know the answers to a couple of questions that I have as they relate to early American items...

1.) Would an apprentice been allowed to put only their mark on a piece while under the apprenticeship of a master?

2.) How long after an apprentice went out on his own could he become the master for someone else?

Any info appreciated.

1. It would be very unusual for an apprentice to even have a mark before he was passed as a journeyman. It may have happened in an informal relationship, but it would be highly unlikely and impossible to prove.

2. There was never any broad formalized standard in the colonies except in major cities like New York, Boston, Plilly, etc. Generally, once trained, a smith would work as a journeyman for several years before setting up their own works. In this time, they would not have had an apprentice, since they were not the master. In some cities, they would need formal recognition by the guild or other silversmiths that they were masterful. In other places and as time went on, if they had the money, they could immediately open a shop or buy out their master or go into partnership with someone else. At that point, as long as they could afford it, had the tools, and the work, they were free to take on an apprentice.
