These are sugar tongs with the mark for I B Grant. Israel Boone Grant has a write up in both Norman Mack’s book on Missouri silversmiths and Boultinghouse’s book on Kentucky silversmiths. He was in St. Louis 1817 to 1820 and for me is one of the earlier examples of St. Louis silver that I have.
I could not find any published mark of his, but these tongs appear to be the right style for the time and as I have no knowledge of any other I B Grant will call these Grant’s mark from St. Louis. Of interest in Mr. Grant’s life is the belief expressed by Boultinghouse that he apprenticed with Asa Blanchard in Lexington, Kentucky and that he was related to Daniel Boone.
These tongs are heavy for this time as they weigh 2 ounces. Unfortunately, they are not monogrammed.

There is a spoon listed by MESDA c 1813 with an earlier mark.

It is presumed he apprenticed to Blanchard, because his older brother William did, as recorded in the 1808 Fayette County Order Book, but no similar indenture for Israel has been found.

Daniel Boone was his grand uncle through his paternal grandmother's line.

WEV do you know how MEDSA came to use the 1813 date. If Mr. Grant moved to Missouri after his apprenticeship ended he must have had a die with his mark while still in Kentucky.
Most of the information in the Missouri book on silversmith seems to come from Boultinghouse's research. That book was published in 1980 and I am always amazed at his pre-computer days research.

Here is another example on Grant’s work from an exhibition held in Georgetown, Kentucky. This exhibition did not attribute the spoon shown to either St. Louis or Scott County.

Scott, I am in the process of downsizing and going through some old books that I have not looked at for some time and just happened to see this.
I can always justify buying new tongs as they really do not take up much space.
