This is a typical bird back spoon from the early 1800s and from Abner Reeder when he lived in either Philadelphia or Trenton. From what I have seen Mr. Reeder started in Philadelphia with a partnership with John McFee and then by himself for a short time before moving to Trenton, NJ.

His move to Trenton is mentioned in Suzanne Corlette’s article for the New Jersey Historical Society. This article includes this information:

quote:
Postwar prosperity in New Jersey attracted increasing numbers of silversmiths, especially to Newark, New Brunswick, Princeton and Trenton, so that by the last decade of the century there was a silversmith and clockmaker in practically every town of any size, and the more populous centers supported three or four. During this time, refugees from the yellow. fever epidemics in Philadelphia often fled to New Jersey. One of them, silversmith Abner Reeder, settled in Trenton where he was a leading silversmith and banker for more than a quarter of a century.
The inscription is “D Barclay Co. D PB”. Others, better than me at deciphering inscriptions, suggested that the PB may stand for Philadelphia Battalion and the D may be a Delancey Barclay or a David Barclay. I suspect I will never be able to pin down the actual owner unless other spoons pop up with better provenance.
