Wendell Ariel 1895 Wendell is known for more mundane, not too interesting flatware patterns, many of which were originated by Mauser. Their Ariel pattern is a unique exception. It is one of the most attractive multi-motif figural settings in our collection, high quality and very heavy. It is one of those patterns that you find one piece at a time and feel lucky to do so. We just recently picked up two keys to the set, the knife and dinner fork after looking for over two years. Dating Ariel was first produced in 1895 like many of the other art nouveau figurals. Wendell was out of the flatware business by 1900, and I have not heard that the dies were sold to anyone else. Pieces Shown Item Length Our Cost Photo: Knife, Dinner Fork, Salad Fork. IP: Logged |

The following is from an 1896 Wedell catalog. We believe that this catalogue was for the jewelry trade and not the end user; the bottom of The "Ariel." page says: "The demand for sterling Silver Flatware is constantly increasing. Teaspoon. Dessert Spoon. Table spoon. Medium Fork. Dessert Fork. Sold by Weight at $1.90 Per Ounce. -------------------------------------- Ice Cream Spoons. Bon Bon Server. Oyster Fork. Pastry Forks. Salad Spoon to match. Salt Spoons. per doz Mustard Spoon. each Salad Forks (indiv.). Pickle Knives. Cheese Knives. Jelly Knives. Cake Knives. Crumb Knives. Ice Cream Slicer. Fish Knife. Fish Fork. Sugar Sifter (small) Sugar Sifter (large) Cheese Scoop (small)

Thanks Scott. Your catalogue answers a question I had asked above regarding what it available. From the catalogue I learned I will be able to find a larger teaspoon, a coffee spoon and a flat butter. Since you do have the Wendell catalogue I would be interested if you could compare pricing of Ariel vs other less exotix Wendell patterns of the era. IP: Logged |

Perhaps Scott could scan in a few pages for us to see what some of the other pieces looked like. IP: Logged |

Would be really interested if the Junior Roccoco looked like the Mauser "American Beauty" ------------------ IP: Logged |

Bob is referring to his post (Shiebler's American Beauty) regarding American Beauty and Jr. Rococo patterns. The pattern in Wendell catalog for Jr. Rococo is not similar. IP: Logged |

I just turned up an Ariel teaspoon with the etched bowl. It is nicely done, with the name Laura in wild Nouveau lettering, within an irregular surround. IP: Logged |
