At what period in time did American manufacturers switch from silverplated steel to stainless blades on place knives? Did the style change from blunt to new french at the same time? IP: Logged |

The new masterwork "Tiffany Silver Flatware" by William Hood reports that Tiffany offered both carbon steel and plated blades prior to the first world war. In 1917 the "Bluebook" their catalog announced the availability of non rusting blades. These were first intoduced in Sheffield in 1914. The change to French style was independent of the change to SS. Tiffany continued to produce "plain" or blunt blades for most of their patterns, even in SS. IP: Logged |

I would just add to Bob's comment that most other American makers began to offer stainless steel blades in the early twenties. IP: Logged |
