When do we first realize that we love silver? In my case, it was the purchase of a LARGE box of silverplate flatware for $5. I was fascinated by the various patterns and marks, and wanted to know all about them. When I discovered Tere Hagan's book of silverplate flatware patterns, I spent the whole day cataloguing "the box". From then on, I was at the thrift store every chance I got. Isn't it great when you can collect something you like for 20 cents a piece? Then came the fateful day when I pulled a piece of sterling out of the 20 cent box, and the treasure hunt commenced in earnest. What got you hooked? IP: Logged |

I became a silver addict beginning with buying cheap silver jewelry at yard sales as a kid. Earlier tonight I was cleaning out a bookcase and a stack of photos dated 1998 came falling out of a book. They were snapshots I had taken of my collection at that age (I was about 14 I guess when they were taken). I had a laugh looking at some of the tragic pieces I used to hang onto

These photos are great, Paul! I don't remember not being interested in silver; my mom was an antiques dealer with a great collection of English and Irish silver and we always had lots of it around. As a teenager, I started working for her and I think one of the early appeals of silver was that the hallmarking system made it easier to date pieces, which in turn made it easier to learn about (or so I thought at the time!!).
