I recently returned from a trip to New Orleans, and I was struck by the noticeable difference between there and here (the Northeast)in attitudes towards silver. The silver dealers of New Orleans are definitely geared towards people who want silver to use, rather than simply collect. Silver is obviously in high demand, but mainly as a part of "gracious living". It was odd to feel out of place in a room full of silver, but there you go. Not that the silver available is any less than magnificent; it is just odd to realize that someone buying a Regency tea urn or soup tureen there will probably be using it at their next party! It was certainly an eye-opener, from my standpoint at least. What have you observed where you live? Is silver a "collector's item", or is it still a vital part of entertaining? IP: Logged |
