This isn't exactly a silver story, but it is funny (and true). A few years ago I was at a nice outdoor antique show in California (One good thing about CA, the outdoor shows are rarely rained out!) Anyway, it was a normal beautiful sunny day, and I was making a quick pass through around mid-day. I spied a nice modern pewter bowl by Just Andersen, a noted Danish metalware designer. It was rather plain, just a deep polished bowl on a flared ring foot. On the other hand, the dealer was looking to unload it for 8 bucks, so I paid him in cash and walked off with it, sans bag (or receipt). As I browsed though the rest of the show, I was holding the bowl by the rim, with my forearm across the mouth of the bowl. Peridically, I began to feel sharp stinging sensations on my arm, like a bee had stung me. Whenever I looked at my arm, though, there was nothing to be seen. This puzzled me for a while, until I finally figured out what was happening. Whenever I stood just right, with the mouth of the bowl pointing towards the sun, the bowl would act as a parabolic mirror, concentrating the sun's rays on my forearm. Like a bug under a magnifying glass, I was burning a hole in my arm! I quickly decided to hold the bowl another way. Mark Trail Survival Tip: If you are ever lost in the wilderness and need to start a fire, just pull out your trusty silver serving bowl. (A tureen might also work in a pinch. Have your butler pack one of each before your next expedition). IP: Logged |

Your story reminds me of my grandfather. He was generally a pipe smoker, but occasionally enjoyed a cigarette while out walking. He rolled his own and carried an old silver tobacco box, curved for the hip, that had a polished elliptical depression on the front. After making up his smoke, he would aim the box to the sun and use it to light up. I always thought this a clever design, if indeed it was intended. Unfortunately the box disappeared after he died; I've never seen another like it. IP: Logged |
