My wife and I have a narrowboat which we charter out for holidays. In England the Goverment rules governing providing food are very onerous even if you are only catering for four people at a time. As part of our risk anlysis we found a serious risk that as we leave the boat for two or three days each month, with the freezer etc coupled to a rather unreliable shore power supply, we might not detect periods when the freezer was allowed to defrost and then refeeze. The answer - other than eyeballing - was to half fill a plastic container with water, and put a small dense object on top. When we return we shake the container - if it rattles the freezer is fine. If the water has unfrozen and then refrozen then the object will have sunk and gets embedded in ice. You've guessed the object - a small silver 1 oz ingot. Heavy, compact, virtualy inert, and has natural anti-septic properties. IP: Logged |
