While in Washington DC hawking my new book on the White House, my co-author and i actually went to the White House visitor's center--the closest either of us has gotten to the place itself. There on display is the amazing Hiawatha's Barge, made by Gorham Mfg. Co. for the 1876 United States Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Julia Grant selected this piece for the White House during her visit to the opening of the exposition. The image here is from a 1940 newspaper photograph, in which it was described as having been made by Indians! That's how alien Victorian silver was to 1940 eyes. Lucky it didn't get scrapped. The Grant association probably saved it, although it didn't save much else from the Grant's White House shopping in the 1860s and 70s. IP: Logged |
