If I can remember how to post pictures, you will see the Phnom Penh shop where my son took a set of Shreve sugar tongs to be repaired as a present for me. The owner of the shop had a new pair of tongs made instead of repairing the old ones. She was so pleased and happy to do this for him that all he could do was thank her. I'll have to wait to have the old ones repaired.

This is my favorite of the pieces in the shop. About nine pounds of silver at today's price puts it out of my league though...even if I could figure out how to get it safely home.

About 14 inches high....the owner of the shop told me that she sold the large pieces of silver like this mostly to Thais, but the economic downturn has been hard on her customers and the recent political situation hasn't helped. I would have loved to stay and talk to her longer if only my time had been my own. Her English is excellent. Lucky for me because my language skills are pathetic. Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea where the tongs (either set) are at the moment. When I find them, I'll post a photo. I should have a few other pictures of Cambodian silver too. On the grounds of the royal palace there is a building called the silver pagoda with its floor covered in silver tiles. There is a place where a few tiles have lifted and they look between an eighth and a quarter of an inch thick, some are engraved and some plain. No pictures allowed though--too bad. I wish I could have seen it with all the tarnish polished away and the floor shining. I would have been happy to volunteer as a polisher. IP: Logged |
