Being a silver collector from a southern state in the USA it appears that the chance of me "stumbling" over a great sterling piece is much less than say someone from the north east or say European countries. When people move to Florida they sell their silver and antiques, bringing few things here for their new lifes. As far as I know we don't have a long history of great silversmiths either. There is always the internet, but I bet finding a great find more fun in person? Right? Anybody have thoughts on this? IP: Logged |

I speak from experience. I am originally from Sarasota, and found things there all the time. I really miss it, infact. Now, in Western North Carolina, it's the opposite. I find very little (in person) most of my finds are online. And yes, finding that silver in person is way better than online. I have found a few pieces up here, but nothing like florida. asheland IP: Logged |

I used to live in southeast Alabama, and would comb the shops there and in northwest Florida, and never found a whole lot there. Then I moved to north Alabama, and things changed dramatically. I haven't found a lot of GREAT silver, but I have found a lot of underpriced silver. Mostly rather common mid-20th century pieces, but I have managed to find some nice continental pieces as well. Venus, I don't have any direct experience of buying in the Southern states, but I would be suprised if your conclusion were true of say the Carolinas and Virginia, which had a strong affinity with England at least throught the Civil War. I have also learned not to rule anthing out based on location. I have seen American silver in a flea market in Bucharest, Romania, and English sterling in a shop in the Netherlands near the German border. I totally agree that finding a piece is more fun than buying it on line, if for no other reason than you get to see other items while you shop! Tom IP: Logged |

Here in Southern Arizona the climate draws folks and their treasures here for retirement. Every once in a while I get an oportunity to buy something the heirs are not interested in. It is sad to have to wait for someone's death to be able to make a find. Fred IP: Logged |

actually I purchased some Austrian silverware on an auction site. The seller lives right around the corner from my office. lol so I guess somethings do find their way here too. nice lady and I think we will be good friends. Yes it is sad for someone to have to pass to find nice things at good prices. It happened right here last week. The wife died and the husband was almost fine china and sterling away. I didn't buy direct from him, but I did get some things from a dealer. Sad.... IP: Logged |
