Have I an interesting tale to tell...as a silver dealer and being quite friendly with a number of antiques dealers in my area, I stopped in today at a favorite shop. The owner then told me she had a lovely basket full of silver that she 'couldn't' sell to me. It turns out that two young women sold her a nice mixed batch of silver, and then proceed to literally steal items from her! (This lady has a two floor establishment). Unable to get the police there in time, she notified antiques shops in neighboring areas, and sure enough, the young 'ladies' tried to sell these shops the goods they had just stolen from the first shop! Thank goodness the police were already aware of what was happening and were able to arrest the thieving women. This story illustrates two very important points for the silver buyer, regardless of why you buy. First, KNOW your dealer. Fortunately for me, my dealer friend is as honest as the sun is bright. She actually bought the lot with me in mind. But now she's stuck holding on to stolen silver, can't sell it, and the police have neither taken it for evidence nor told her what to do with it(admittedly, we are rather rural). The next point is that a buyer should and has the right to ask where the silver came from...was it an estate, an auction or a private buy etc.? While this is an unpleasant experience for my dealer friend, we can all benefit from the story. Ask, ask, and ask again, lest you be the one innocently 'caught' holding the bag! IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, no industry is free of scoundrels and thieves. I remember being at one of the large northeast shows a few years ago and heard from some dealers about an elderly gentleman who had a tremor. He seemed harmless, but lo and behold, it was an act. When the dealer's attention was averted, the tremor disappeared and so did the goods! [This message has been edited by June Martin (edited 02-18-2002).] IP: Logged |
