My home was destroyed in a furnace fire some years ago this month while I was in New Orleans at a conference. Fortunately I didn't have much silver then but I owned a James Robinson flatware set. When I called them as I was itemizing the losses for the insurance company they asked me if I had dug in the ashes for the silver. They expected the silver to survive the fire because it was hand forged. I was skeptical, the fire was intense, the investigator estimated close to 2000 deg F. Months went by before the backhoe operator met me at the site to clear the debris in preparation to rebuild. Incredibly we salvaged a number of black twisted pieces of silver, some just fragments, from the corner of the foundation where the silver chest had stood. I doubted it could be repaired but I shipped it to James Robinson as directed. They called me with a quote and planned to replace the knife blades. Later they asked if I would agree to a very narrow but original carving knife blade, pictured below. The blade is 11.5 inches long. They returned the restored silver some weeks later. The shell design is a little less distinct on some of the restored pieces, there are some residual scuffs in the area of the marks, and the set is incomplete but the salvaged pieces are precious. I was told they enjoyed the challenge. IP: Logged |
