I have recently acquired a serving tray, that was manufactured by Meriden, it has the old style scales of justice trademark, and is numbered 05010, with the letter "S", stamped under the numbers. The tray is oval, 29" by 18", has handles and ornate engraving. I believe the base metal is nickel, most of the plating has worn off, and the base metal has a yellow tint, and the tray is quite heavy. I'd appreciate any information about the tray, and if there is a company that does re-plating, I'd like to have the tray re-plated. ------------------ IP: Logged |

The "No. 5010, Chased." oval tray was pictured in Meriden's 1867 catalog. The tray was available in sizes from ten inches to 30 inches (two inch increments). It isn't clear whether or not the measurement included the handles -- the smaller sizes did not have handles. The "05010" indicates a nickel silver base metal with silver soldered mounts. Nickel silver is an alloy containing nickel and other metals, but no silver. Mounts would be the handles and any applied trim. Silver solder is also an alloy containing silver and other metals.
