HI I am really stuck trying to identify this piece. It seems to be a salt pot?cylinder on stand two handles lid at front with an ornate pattern that seems to be hand imprinted. The marks underneath are a sort of indented circle with maybe a head ,then a bugle with a flag,JD&S not sure about the J.Then EPEM then the serial no 3518.I would appreciate any help at all cant find ID on Marks anywhere was wondering if possibly to do with civil war.. Hi, Your piece, whatever it is, is English silverplate, made by the prolific James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. They began incorporating the bugle and flag stamp into their marks around 1879, and continued using the mark until at least the 1930s. I am not certain as to the significance of the bugle mark, but being English I don't think it has anything to do with our Civil War. I would wager that the EPEM stamps are actually EPBM, for ElectroPlate on Brittania Metal. Britannia is a hard pewter alloy. I hope this answers most of your questions. If you can post a picture of the piece, we might be able to determine exactly what it is. Brent IP: Logged |

Thank you for the pictures. Having seen the piece, I think it might be a toothpick or match holder. I am no expert on Victorian whatzits though. I hope some others may put forth their ideas. IP: Logged |

We have documentation which identified this item as a Sugar Helmet or sugar bucket. They come with a small scoop. IP: Logged |
