Hi, I have a little creamer that I would like some info on. It has N.(I OR T.)N.H.(y.or j.I think)H.R. G.C.S. Then it says Reed & Barton Silver Soldered 353 2 oz. It looks very old and I'm wondering its origin and age. Thanks for your time. Sharon IP: Logged |

Well, this is a commercial plated piece. I don't know what all the initials might mean--perhaps it is a hotel or club piece and the initials indicate that--but I don't know where they are on the piece. Silver soldered is a standard mark for good quality electro-plate, indicated that the joints were soldered with silver alloy and not a lead/in alloy. IP: Logged |

The initials are right above the Reed and Barton and the initials G.C.S are centered below the first set of initials:
G.C.S How can I find the approximate age of this item? Thanks for your quick response. IP: Logged |

Still a puzzle. I'm pretty sure these are not, mostly, manufacture related, although some of them (GCS) might have something to do with the base metal under the silver plate. As to dating the piece, it would require a photograph, so I can get a sense of the style. The marks aren't precise enough in this case to date from. A plated creamer, unless it is very very ornate stylistically, is probably not going to be worth much in the open market. Which is not to say it would be collectible. A creamer alone is always less of interest to collectors than a creamer with a sugar bowl, or even better, a whole set. As a curator, I can't really say any more than this without getting into legal trouble, so I'll leave it to any other folks out there... IP: Logged |
