I have a silver plated tray,
With hallmarks that said
IA
8960
E&C (inside a crown) E & C and a “D”
ELKINGTON & CO.
I would like to know how old it is?

I will appreciate any help

Thanks

Adriana

Hallmarks were not used on English silverplate. Many English silverplate makers used crowns in their marks to mimic the crown used in Sheffield hallmarks. The practice stopped after the Sheffield assay office threatened legal action in 1897, so your tray is at least that old.

Elkington & Co. used date marks from 1841 to at least 1986. The "D" on your tray is the date mark. It was struck by the maker and not by the assay office. It indicates 1866 if it is surrounded by a square with clipped corners, 1889 if surrounded by a square with bulging sides on the left and right.

I've done some further checking. According to my references, the crown should be above the "E & Co" and both of these should be in one shield.

Either you've found an undocumented mark, or my references are wrong. In either case, the shape around the date letter is what determines the actual date.

Are my references wrong? What shape is around your date letter?

I was interested to find through a search of silver forum your posted info re:elkington and their own date letters. Is this information on a web site or do you have their manual?

Anyway I have an interesting wine holder that has the date letter F but like an arial font capital F in an rectangle. Could you tell me the year that corresponds to?
Thanks very much,
Linda Cooper

The Elkington dating sequence can be found in Rainwater's American Silver Manufacturers. Your F in a rectangle would indicate 1870.
