I have a silver goblet with the following ingraved on the bottom: "EALES 1779 SILVERPLATE ITALY". Is this a rare item?

Since it's marked 'silverplate, Italy' it's probably a rather recent item. I see a lot of Italian silverplate goblets, I believe they are quite common. The 1779 is probably a pattern i.d. and may mean that it was designed in an earlier style.

My guess is that you have one of these mass produced silver plate champagne glasses:

Also, I believe the mark Eales 1779 is short for Eales of Sheffield since 1779.

Does anyone know why Italy, of all places, became such a source for plated goods in the second half of the 20th century? It's not as if the US plating industry had died--or is that what killed it?

Production of these pieces seems to roam the globe. I have encountered pieces marked Italy, then a little later production marked Spain or Israel. The rather ornate grape and vine pattern goblets from the 70's which seem to come from the same firm have all three countries plus occasionally India on them. These look to be put up for bids and awarded to the lowest bidder.
