About the "Hand Hammered" stamp: For a piece of silverplate such as this, it is almost certain that the bowl was fomed by spinning on a lathe, then hammered to give it a "hand-crafted" look. The look of hand-wrought silver (i.e. hammer marks) first became popular in the 1870's on a limited basis, and the popularity has waxed and waned ever since. The "Hand Hammered" mark is pure snob appeal, giving the illusion of hand work on a piece largely made by machine. It was, however, an effective selling point.

7318 is Poole's pattern 7300 series and the 18 is the inventory # assigned to your particular bowl in the pattern series. Poole assigned a block of 100 numbers to each pattern. Any silverplated holloware in your pattern would havea number between 7300 and 7399.
