I have a silver four-legged bowl, approx. 8 inches in diameter, stamped "F.B. Rogers Silver Co., Taunton, Mass. Quadruple. 1182" I read the other posting and learned about the F.B. Rogers Co. Now, I would like to know if there is a way of approximately identifying the age of the bowl that I have. (Maybe 1920s/1930s??) J. Green IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, dating a piece of silverplate usually requires a visual inspection. If you can post a picture, we might be able to narrow down the possibilities. 20th century American silverware varies from extremely stylish (and easy to date) to very traditional (and almost impossible to date). Some styles that were popular in 1910 are still popular today. Usually it is only the construction methods and the quality of the design that provide a clue as to when it was made. IP: Logged |

Here are some pictures of the bowl in question. At first glance it certainly looks like a piece of the 1890 to 1910 era. Grape decoration has been popular on silver since at least the 1850's, and it experienced a peak of interest around 1905. Several companies issued grape-patterned silverplate flatware lines right around then, and this piece of holloware might have been made at this time. I doubt that it is older than 1890, but it might be as new as the 1950's. Still, I am just making an educated guess. Anyone else want to take a stab at it? IP: Logged |

The "quadruple" mark is also helpful in dating this. Meriden B quit using such marks in 1896. Some other makers (not sure which ones) continued using "quadruple" or "quadruple plate" markings until about 1912. IP: Logged |
