I have recently purchased a service for 12 of 1847 Rogers Bros Flatware. The pieces are stamped on the reverse, after the name, with an I and S. Can someone tell me what those two letters stand for? IP: Logged |

IS stands for the International Silver Co.. Meriden CT, owners of the "1847 Rogers Bros." trademark since 1898. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the quick response! With only the markings mentioned in the first message, how would one tell if this was plate or sterling? IP: Logged |

99.99999% of the time 1847 Rogers Bros. flatware is silver plate. Only occasionally does one find 1847 Rogers Bros. flatware in sterling and then it is marked sterling. I have never seen sterling 1847 Rogers Bros. flatware with the IS mark. It has always been silver plate. IP: Logged |
