I have a serving dish from the Poole Silver Co. I think it has the initials of EPCA or EPOA then the name of the company then below the name it has 1892 I would like to know first if it is silver plate or sterling and if it was really made in 1892 or is that a lot or piece number. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Hello Jacquelin: While far from an expert, I am certain your Poole silver piece is silverplate...were it sterling, it would clearly (and proudly!) be marked either 'Sterling' or .925 or .925/1000. I am sure the two beginning letters to your item are EP for Electro Plated and the other letters refer to the base metal. The number you mentioned is most likely a pattern/style/mold number for identification reference for the manufacturer or retailer. While the Poole Silver Co. was founded in 1893, they are still in business today. The "sterling' or '.925' mark became somewhat an American standard around 1860-70 (guess it depended where you lived and how fast the carrier pigeon could fly) and all goods that were 'real' or solid silver received the mark. Judging from the year of Pooles beginnings, they would clearly be in the know as to marking their solid silver as 'sterling'. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
