recently i found a piece of silver stored away. I would appreciate help in identifying the piece. It is hallmarked -meriden silver plate co quadruple plate -and has a stamped number adjacent 1168.The base of the piece is rectangular in shape with 4 decorative suports at the front, rear & 2 sides. Attached to this is a shell shaped rest. Above this is a box with glass lid, velvet lined. Sorry about the detail of its description but it is the best i can do.

Meriden Silver Plate Co., not to be confused with Meriden Britannia Co., was founded in 1869 and became part of International Silver Co. in 1898. They produced quality plated wares, and the trademarks of the company continued to be used into the 1920's. The fact that your piece says Quadruple leads me to think that it probably dates from before 1900.

From your description, it sounds like you may have a jewel casket. Women would store their jewelry in things like this, and some were made in silverplate. Jewel caskets are desirable to collectors of silverplate, particularly if condition is good.

The description would seem to fit a jewel casket but might also be a glove box or handkerchief box which also tended to have glass lids.
