I need some help identifing a silver tea set. One of the marks has an H at the top left. A dot at the top right. A dot at the bottom left and an S at the bottom right. The mark to the left of this is a crown with an X under it. The mark on the right is a Leopard. Below all of this is a triangle with the words, silver on copper. This a tea set that has been passed down through the family and I would like to learn some of its history. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dale

The marks you describe sound like those used by both English and American silverplaters in the 20th century. I can not find your exact marks in any reference, unfortunately. The use of copper as a base for plating, rather than german silver or britannia, was kind of a snooty affectation. It was supposed to hearken back to Old Sheffield Plate, in which the silver is actually fused to the copper, rather than simply plated over it.

Suffice it to say that your set is English or American, and probably dates from the first half of the 20th century. I will see if I can identify the manufacturer for you at some point.

Thank you for your time and effort. I did want to add that the mark on the right is a Leopards head. I guess it could be a lions head. The mark looks just like the one that is used for London in 1697-1719
Thanks Dale
