Hi!, I have this Lidded Tankard or Water lidded pitcher not sure what it is called. Any way on the bottom marks are: MERIDEN B. COMPANY PATS June 13,1868 and PATS Nov. 30,1868 # 175. Has a pour spout on it. Any thing you can tell me will be helpful. Should tell it is 14.6 inches tall, about 8 inches at bottom and about 7 inches at top. Thank You For Your Time, IP: Logged |

It sounds like an ice pitcher, also known as an ice-water pitcher. These pitchers were used to supply cool drinking water before homes had mechanical refrigeration and ice cubes. They were popular from the 1850s to the 1890s. Yours was made by the Meriden Britannia Co. of Meriden, Connecticut. I've seen the patent dates on other ice pitchers that they made, but have been unable to locate the patents. "175" is their catalog number. Hope this helps!
