Occasionally in these forums the topic of "Hotel Plate" comes up. Hotel Plate is heavy duty, thickly plated silverplate used in the dining rooms of fine hotels and restaurants. Hotel Ware was quite common in the early 20th century, and is still used today in many fine dining establishments. In general, "Hotel Ware" is not highly collected. Some related wares, though, are collected. These include railroad, steamship, and military plate, especially that used by the U.S. Navy. Another less common collectible is Airline plate. Most airline flatware is found in stainless steel, but there is some interesting airline silverplate around. Airline flatware is often "cutting edge" design, inspired by the "speed" and "modernity" of airline travel.
Here is a great airline silverplate design from the 30's, made by International Silver. The design is called "Flagship", at least by collectors, and is apparently not that rare. Still, the 3-D nose of a Douglas DC-3 makes for a great Streamline Moderne design. I think it is great! Brent IP: Logged |
